Cherry Ames Main Characters
The Spencer Club
The Spencer Club consists of Cherry Ames, Ann Evans, Gwen Jones, Bertha Larsen, Mai Lee, Josie Franklin, Vivian Warren and Maire Swift. The girls attend Spencer Nursing School and afterwards join the Army Nurse Corps.
Cherry Ames
Family: Cherry has a twin brother, Charlie, who is a few minutes older than Cherry. Her mother's name is Edith Anderly Ames, and her father is William Ames. Her Grandmother who Cherry was named after was called Charity Anderly.
Birthday: December 24th.
Lives: Cherry Ames family home is in Hilton and is described ais large and serene. Cherry moves to a Greenwich Village apartment, at Number 9 Standish Street, New York.
Education: Cherry's education through the series develops with her career and includes her Diploma from Hilton High School, a Graduate degree from Spencer Hospital School of Nursing, postgraduate courses at Spencer Hospital School of Nursing and Advanced college courses in public health nursing.
Cherry's skills and abilities include: Typing, bookkeeping, speaking Spanish, Italian and French, Skiing, Swimming, and playing the piano.
Gwen Jones
Described as a red head with freckles and blue eyes Gwen is from Pennsylvania where her father is a doctor. During the series we also become familar with several of Gwen's family including Gwen's Aunt Kathy Martin who Cherry and Gwen move in with at one stage.
Bertha Larsen
Descibed as blonde, blue eyed and plump farm girl from Minnesota. Bertha moves to New York to join the rest of the Spencer Girls at the Greenwich Village apartment.
Ann Evans
Ann is a quiet girl with light brown hair and dark blue eyes. Ann is from Indian City, Illinois and actually met Cherry's trwin brother Charlie years before she met Cherry. Ann and Cherry become friends on the first day at Spencer Nursing School. Ann marries Jack Powell in England and the pair settle in New York later moving to Canada and Alaska.
Vivian Warren
Vivian starts the series as a rival of Cherry's at Nursing School. As the story progresses Vivian and Cherry become friends. Vivian's character during the series suffers from conflicting storylines from the two authors of the series. She marries Tod a Wall Street Clerk and moves to South America but later reappears.
Marie Swift
Maire is a blonde, rich girl from San Francisco. Maire marries in the series and moves to Switzerland where she helps Cherry get a job at a Ski Resort.
Josie Franklin
Described as a timid girl with glasses. As a student nurse Josie is introduced as a fellow student that works the same ward as Cherry. The pair continue to share work through several books in the series.
Mai Lee
A Chinese -American we learn in Student Nurse that Mai decided to take up nursing after her families village were destroyed by the Japanese. Mai also has family in San Francisco.
Other Characters
Charles Ames
Charlie is Cherry’s twin brother. Described as Cherry’s opposite in appearance with light hair and blue eyes he attended Hilton High with Cherry where he was a member of the school football team. Charlie joined the Army Air Force where he had a career as a aerial gunner and them the Air Transport Command. After the Air Force Charlie completed college and worked as in aviation engineering.
Wade Cooper
Wade is one of Cherry’s suitors in the series. He is an Air Force Captain that is first introduced in “Flight Nurse.” Wade has a daredevil reputation that leads him to be placed in the ambulance plane services to tame his ways. When Wade transfers back to combat fighting he names his plane after Cherry. Wade asks Cherry to marry him during the series but Cherry doesn’t think that he is ready to settle down. After the Air Force Wade becomes a commercial pilot before going overseas to work.
