Production for the tv series began in 1977, with filming commencing during the Summer of that year. The series ran for two seasons covering 19 of the 21 Enid Blyton books. Five on a Treasure Island the first book in the series couldn't be made as The Children's Film Foundation still had the film and TV rights to the book as well as Five have a mystery to solve for the same reason. The only other book not made into an episode was Five have plenty of fun.
The series starred Michele Gallagher as George, Marcus Harris as Julian, Gary Russell as Dick and Jenny Thanisch as Anne, while Timmy the dog was played by a Border Collie called Toddy.
The Famous Five series was very successful at the time but didnt go past Season 2 because the Enid Blyton Estate didn't allow the production company to create new original stories under The Famous Five name so once they had completed two seasons covering 19 of the 21 books the series had to end which was a great shame for a great children's tv series.

The Famous Five Cast
Michele Gallagher as George
- The character George: Georgina is a tomboy and insists that people call her George. She has short dark, curly hair and dresses in boy's clothes. George is often mistaken for a boy and when this happens she is very pleased. George is very liakbale but is not without her faults. George has a fiery temper and is very stubborn. During the series she is also prone to sulkiness and jealousy. George is cousin to siblings Julian, Dick and Anne.
Marcus Harris as Julian
- The character Julian: Julian is the oldest of the five. Julian is cousin to George and older brother to Dick and Anne. He is seen as the leader of the group and he is tall, strong and intelligent. Julian has a protective attitude towards the others in the book series and this is interpreted in the series to include argueing and stating rather forceful and rude statements to adults when the situation requires it.
Gary Russell as Dick
- The character Dick: Dick has a good sense of humour, and is adventurous in nature. He is the same age as his cousin George, and a year younger than his brother Julian and is older than his sister Anne.
Jenny Thanisch as Anne
- The character Anne: Anne is the youngest in the group, and generally acts like the mother of the group by taking care of domestic duties during the Five's camping holidays. She often becomes frightened during adventures and is at times told to stop being silly. When under pressure however Anne does rise to the challenge and displays bravery and brains in solving mysteries.
Border Collie Toddy as Timmy the dog
- The character Timothy (Timmy or Tim): Timothy, also called Tim or Timmy. Timmy is described as clever and smarter than most dogs by George. Timmy in the book series is al mongrel. The dog is a larger size mix breed and he often provides physical protection for the children from Criminals.
